How to Tie a Merovingian Knot

Merovingian Knot Tying Steps

  1. Begin by crossing the wide end under the narrow end to the left.
  2. Make a loop and pass the wide end through it.
  3. Take it completely through the loop down to the left.
  4. Take the wide end in front of the narrow end to the right.
  5. Pass it up through the neck loop.
  6. Take it over the central knot down to the right.
  7. Pass the wide end behind the narrow end to left.
  8. Take the wide end into the neck loop from the left side, in front of the narrow end.
  9. Lift the narrow end up.
  10. (It should look like this.)
  11. Pull the wide end through the band and up.
  12. Continue pulling until tight.
  13. Take it down to finish the knot and adjust as necessary.

About the Merovingian Knot

Did you ever see The Matrix Reloaded? The Merovingian (The Frenchman) is a character who took the Ediety Knot from relative obscurity and made it stylish again. This knot is now referred to as the Merovingian Knot or Matrix Knot in honour of that character. Red pill, anyone?

If you don’t want to look as villainous as the knot’s namesake, opt for stripes or lighter colours. We suggest wearing a vest over the Merovingian Knot as the ends of the tie do not line up.

“Have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake up from that dream, how would you know the difference between the dream world and the real one?” - Morpheus. Something to think about.
